VALE TOM KEARNS

By Kieran Kearns

Thomas “Tommie” Kearns, born in Emlaghfad, Ballymote, Co. Sligo, Ireland in 1932, was a man whose life journey was a testament to resilience, community spirit, and boundless love for family and heritage. As the second son of Margaret and James Kearns, he grew up in a close-knit family with two older brothers, John William and Peter, and two younger sisters, Margaret and May.

From an early age, Tommie experienced the joys and challenges of rural life in Ireland. He fondly recounted tales of his youth, filled with Gaelic Football matches, lively ceilis, and a strong sense of community where neighbours supported one another through thick and thin. These formative years instilled in him the values of hard work, camaraderie, and compassion that he carried throughout his life.

In 1960, Tommie embarked on a new chapter by moving to London, drawn by the promise of adventure and opportunity. He made this move at the insistence and support of Kathleen, the love of his life, who would become his steadfast companion on a journey spanning nearly six decades. Their marriage in 1965 marked the beginning of a partnership filled with love, laughter, and shared dreams.

The couple’s adventurous spirit led them to Australia in 1970, where they set sail with their growing family in search of a better life. Tommie’s dedication to community and volunteerism quickly became evident as he immersed himself in various organisations, including the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), where he served as President of Western Australia in 1973.

Tommie’s contributions to the Irish community in Western Australia were manifold, ranging from his involvement in cultural organizations like Comhaltas and the Claddagh Association to his active participation in the Fremantle St. Patrick’s Day Parades. His passion for preserving Irish music, culture, and traditions endeared him to many, earning him accolades such as the Brendan Award for outstanding service to the Irish community in WA.

Despite his busy schedule, Tommie cherished family time and instilled in his children the importance of togetherness and shared meals. His love for his grandchildren was evident in the joy he found in watching them grow and engaging them in spirited conversations about life, sports, and the world around them.

Tommie’s boundless energy, infectious laughter, and warm smile left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His legacy extends far beyond his immediate family, encompassing a network of friends and acquaintances whose lives he touched with his kindness and generosity.

As Tommie Kearns bids farewell to this world, he leaves behind a rich tapestry of memories, cherished relationships, and a profound sense of pride in his Irish heritage. His spirit lives on in the hearts of those who loved him, forever remembered for his love of life, his love for family, and his unwavering commitment to making the world a brighter place.
